Clinical Interns at Evergreen Counseling
Our clinical interns are here to help you on your therapy journey.
Clinical interns are current graduate school students training to become a licensed mental health counselor. They do all the work of professional therapists, like diagnostic assessments and providing therapeutic care. There are benefits to seeing an intern, such as:
More Affordable Therapy
Seeing an intern at Evergreen Counseling costs about 60 percent less than seeing a fully licensed clinician.
Extra Support for Your Case
Clinical interns receive weekly supervision sessions with licensed therapists at the practice and their classroom instructors, which means you are really getting the expertise of multiple therapists at once.
Fresh Perspectives
Therapists-in-training bring a lot of curiosity and enthusiasm to their work. Clinical interns are learning about the most current best practices in therapy today, then bringing all of that new knowledge to you.

What’s it like seeing a clinical intern for therapy?
Here are some frequently asked questions and answers.
-
Sessions with a therapy intern are just like sessions with licensed therapists. You’re setting goals together, building a therapeutic relationship, and working towards those goals.
Therapy is one of those interesting professions where the amount of years a counselor has worked doesn’t necessarily make them more effective. Instead, research tells us that a clinician’s ability to form solid relationships is what determines therapy outcomes. This is what makes it possible for a clinical intern to be just as helpful to you as a licensed therapist.
One difference you may experience is that interns must record some of their sessions for training purposes. If you don’t want to be recorded, you can opt out before sessions begin or at any time during the process.
-
Clinical mental health professionals receive, at minimum, three years of graduate-level education before becoming a prelicensed clinician. The clinical interns at Evergreen Counseling are in their final year of their grad school program, focusing on in-the-field training. In addition to their classes, interns regularly participate in other learning opportunities to keep them current with evidence-based practices.
-
Our clinical supervisors and intake coordinators work together to assess your needs and match you with the right clinician. They assess each intake assignment carefully. If they think your case is too complex for an intern, they will let you know and pair you with a therapist that’s better suited to your needs. But of course, feel free to let our office know if you have significant concerns about this.
However, clinical interns can be very effective therapists – especially when they have the right support. Clinical interns at Evergreen Counseling receive weekly, thorough supervision and case consultation to help them successfully treat clients with a wide range of mental health issues.
-
It costs $75 per session to see a clinical intern. This is $100 less than the normal fee to see a licensed therapist at Evergreen Counseling, making this an affordable option for people who have tight budgets.
If you can’t afford that fee, it’s possible to pursue reduced fee (sliding scale) options. Email [email protected] to ask about sliding scale services.

If you have Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Aetna, or Cigna PPO insurances, you may use this coverage to pay for your sessions with a clinical intern.
