What is Trauma Informed Therapy?

Trauma-Informed Therapy is a specific approach to therapy that centers on recognizing and addressing how past traumatic experiences inform our behaviors, mental health, relationships and well being. Along side your therapist, you’ll work to identify connections between your trauma experiences and your emotional and behavioral responses. Trauma-focused therapy offers an evidence based, gentle journey in gaining skills and strategies to assist you in better understanding, coping with, and processing emotions and memories tied to traumatic experiences. This therapy method can empower you to create a healthier and more adaptive meaning of the experiencing that took place in your life.

How Do I Know if I’ve Experienced Trauma?

This is not a silly question. Some patients we see have had very clear traumatic experiences, but others are truly not sure if what they experienced “qualifies”. We often think of trauma in a context of soldiers home from war, or severe childhood abuse, but there are absolutely less obvious instances of trauma, including by not limited to:

  • Witnessing any kind of violence

  • Death of a loved one

  • Living in an unsafe neighborhood

  • Serious accidents or medical procedures

  • A serious relationship with a mentally/emotionally/physically abusive person, past or present

  • Being constantly put down or shamed by a parent figure

  • Growing up in an oppressive environment

  • Not getting proper attention from a parent

  • Being a caregiver of a parent
